Got up today and headed to Omaha Beach after breakfast. France has a lot of round abouts, the most in the world at 42,986, and we must have hit at least 50 of them. the country side was pretty, lots of cows, sheep, horses and even some donkeys. At the beach we got out and walked a bit. There were two monuments, but not much in the way of historical narrative that we could figure out the events, so we went to the internet to find out more.
Next stop was Bayeux for lunch. It was a nice little town. After lunch we got some gelato and pastries. Then we drove over to the Normandie American Cemetery. There was a good size crowd there, which was nice to see that people haven’t forgotten. We saw the overlook, the chapel and the location of the time capsule. By chance we saw the marker of the only general killed during the landings, General Lesley McNair. I say by chance because he had the same cross as all the others. There were a handful of Jewish stars, at one location about 4. The cemetery was beautifully done.
The last picture is a view from the backyard of the bnb we’re staying at. That’s it for today.
