Lessons Learned From Train Trip – Part 2

Continuing from my previous post, number 5 is Railbookers, the Amtrak travel agent and the one I used. I asked them to do something out of the ordinary and they did the best job they could. I don’t know how they would have done if I had just done a canned trip.

Communication was the problem. I didn’t make myself clear as to what was important to me and I didn’t check the itinerary close enough. If I had I would have noticed that I was on the train at night in the northwest and would miss all the views and I would have caught that I would be on a bus. Both could have been changed if caught early. Unfortunately I didn’t get the vouchers until the day before I left and the advance trip details were not clear.

Lessons learned for next time. I still would have used them for the initial trip because it was very complicated. But next time I go I will do the planning myself.

Lessons Learned from Train Trip

Let me start this by saying I had a great time and I would do it again, wait a minute, I will do it again. Most things went as planned and the hiccups were either unforeseen or the result of miscommunication among the parties involved. But there are always things that could be done differently when viewed in hindsight.

First is Amtrak does not own the tracks it runs on. They are at the mercy of the freight trains. Many times we sat on a side rail for an hour waiting for a freight train to pass. So don’t believe it when someone says trains run on time. If you can’t deal with a delay, don’t take the train. This also means if your schedule calls for you to arrive in a station to meet another train due to leave in a couple of hours, don’t expect to make the connection. Amtrak will get you where you need to be, it just might be by bus and a different train. This is what happened to me when I was on the Southwest Chief leaving Albuquerque, heading to Los Angeles to get the Coast Starlight. There was a 2 hour window but the Southwest Chief left Chicago 3 hours late and lost 2 more hours enroute. I really wanted the Coast Starlight because of the views but I would have had to stay over in LA an extra day, pay for the hotel and lose a day in San Francisco. So Amtrak took 14 of us off the train in Barstow, bussed us to Bakersfield and put us on a train that went up the middle of CA, affording magnificent views of junk yards and farms. We got there, just not the way I wanted to.

Number 2 on the list is the Amtrak app. This is a case where no app would be better. You know it’s bad when the only thing on the opening plate is an ad for their credit card. I booked my trip using Amtrak Vacations which uses Railbookers. It was not a standard trip, more on that later.

Number 3 is being your own medicines. A lady seated at the same dinner table as me had a headache. Amtrak does not sell medicine and the attendant told her she would be fired if Amtrak found out she gave her some from her personal items. Most of the stations are too small to sell anything and there isn’t enough time at stops to go find a store.

Number 4 is don’t take the train because you want to see the scenery in national parks. That was my number one reason and what I told the travel agent when I was planning the trip. We went through the parks at night, there was no daytime train. I asked an Amtrak agent about that and was told the trains were not allowed to run through parks during the day. So don’t believe what you read on the internet. This could change in the future, but for now, no great views.

This is getting to be a very long post. So let’s call this part one and I write the next one tomorrow.

Day 34

So I lied. Yesterday was not the last day of the trip I will post. I saw such great views of the Potomac River today that I had to do one more post. I also remembered to take a picture of dinner on Amtrak. There were four choices and the one you’re seeing is the steak dinner. Not bad. I’m at Union Station in DC, waiting for a train to tack me to BWI where my sister will pick me up. I don’t expect anything exciting to happen so I’ll post this one now. But who knows?

Day 31

This morning I left the hotel and did the short walk to the train station. It was a beautiful day in Milwaukee. The train ride to Chicago was only 90 minutes, but they still managed to get there late.

I had a choice between walking 1.8 miles or doing a Lyft. the distance with a roller bag and backpack was a bit much but it was such a nice day. I decided to walk and stop at the Galway point for breakfast. I found a restaurant and put it into my gps. When I got to the address, I couldn’t find the restaurant, so I decided to continue on to the hotel and stop at the next restaurant I passed. Well, I didn’t pass one and got to my hotel. Fortunately, my room was ready.

Today was going to be a food day. My daughter, Helen, sent me the name of a pizza place she knew, and it was right next to the hotel. I sat at the bar and ordered a deep dish. I was a bit surprised when the bar tender said it would take 45 minutes. I nursed an excellent hard cider and then thoroughly enjoyed the pizza.

I went back to the hotel, took a nap, and then planned out tomorrow’s activities. Later on I went out for ice cream. It was right next to the pizza place.

Day 29

Another night on the train. We get into Milwaukee late afternoon about 2 hours late. I saw some people ice fishing. The pictures are of the Mississippi River.

After a short walk to the hotel and checking in I’m in my room ready for bed. I have a full schedule for tomorrow.

Day 28

It’s a beautiful day to be leaving Whitefish. The train is an hour late but the Whitefish station is nice. I’ll be spending the entire day and half of tomorrow on the train, so I don’t expect much to happen or many pictures, but who knows? Next stop is Milwaukee.

Getting ready for bed now. The day was quiet, just one more delay. A few good views at the beginning of the other side of Glacier National Park. I went to the observation car to see them but of course I picked a seat on the wrong side of the train.

Day 25

Surprise, surprise, the train from Leavenworth to Whitefish MT that I took last night was an hour and 25 minutes late. The usual reason, a freight train, actually two. And one of them had three airplane fuselages strapped down. See the picture below.

So I arrived late, picked up my rental car and decided to head to the hotel to get some advice on what to see and do here. I was in luck, they had a room ready for me to check in and suggestions for things to do. I called up the outfitter to set some tours and the weather is not cooperating. They have a great combo of guided tour through Glacier National Park with snowshoeing. But it’s too warm to snowshoe, too much ice to hike without special shoes and the tour requires a minimum of two people. So looks like I’m on my own.

I drove over to the park to the visitor center to talk to a ranger, but the center is only open weekends. So I grabbed a map and started driving the Going-to-the-Sun Road. I turned around after I hit the road closure a few miles in, but not before I got some good pictures of the lake and the mountains.

I returned to Whitefish, got a late lunch at the Piggyback BBQ, and returned to the hotel for a nap and then spent some time looking up stuff to do tomorrow.

Day 23

This morning was the Seattle hot chocolate run and some of the runners stayed at my hotel. I saw a lot of them at breakfast. It was a good morning for a run.

After breakfast and packing, I checked out and walked over to the Pacific Science Center. I saw an IMAX film on the James Webb Space Telescope, then wandered around the exhibits for a while. They had a nice butterfly room.

Then I stopped for lunch at an Irish Pub, got my bags from the hotel and took a Lyft to the train station. I skipped going to the Space Needle, just didn’t feel like it.

I’m on the train. I have about an hour of daylight and I’m sitting on the left side, which I think is the side for the best views.

I sat on the correct side of the train, at least for as long as it was light out. I saw the bay and I think the Snohomish river. I also figured out I could use one of my biking apps, Komoot, to track the train path, at least for as long as I had service. Wished I had thought of that at the start of the trip.

Got to Leavenworth on time, bus was waiting to take me and a few other people to our hotels. It’s cold because my winter coat is in my suitcase.

Day 21

Woke up to a beautiful day in Seattle. After discussing options with the desk clerk, I decided to walk to the wharf for my 1:25 pm boat trip. I left early so I could do some exploring along the way and at the wharf. I got a Marion berry muffin. A Marion berry is a cross between a blackberry and a blueberry. I went into the Old Curiosity Shoppe and saw Sebastian, a guy who died in the 1880’s and was preserved.

The boat trip was around the bay with a guide pointing out the various landmarks. Unfortunately, I didn’t take notes. Taylor Swift set off a 2.4 magnitude earthquake when she was here. For the other stuff, you’ll have to visit and get on the boat.

One other thing I remember and that was the mention of Pikes Place Market. I decided to stop there since it was on the way back to my hotel. Seattle has some hills but nothing like San Francisco, so I wasn’t too surprised when the entry to the market was by elevator. I got off on the fifth floor because a few other people did. There were stores all around. I visited a few and went up stairs to find more. I think all seven floors were part of the market. I bought some chukkah cherries, some I sent to Debbie because she introduced me to them. If you are reading this Debbie. They will be shipped to your house mid April. I figured you’d be back by then. I also shipped some home to Naomi. Then I found a fish place and shipped some smoked salmon home.

Next door to the fish place as the Athenian seafood restaurant. I sat down and got a big mug of hard cider. While trying to decide between the Seafood Sauté or the Athenian Seafood Bowl, the young man at the next table had ordered the latter and he showed it to me. I ordered the former and he joined me for lunch/dinner. Michael is a master’s student at Michigan and is due to graduate this spring. He’s from Taiwan. He’s into data analytics, so we had an enjoyable time talking shop. I wish him well, I think he will be successful in anything he does. Michael, check out mfpt.org. If it’s of interest, I know the current leader, Suri, although it’s been 20 years since we talked.

Michael pointed out the restaurant was the one in the movie ‘You’ve Got Mail’. I forgot to take a picture of the staircase on my way out.

I walked back to the hotel, tired, but happy for a good day.

Day 20

Looked at my ticket and realized I’m on a bus again. Here’s where the grumpy comes in in my grumpy old man name. I’m riding almost as many buses as I am trains. Since nothing can be done about it now, I’ll make the best of it. I checked on the internet at Amtrakguides.com, and the suggestion is I sit on the right side of the train for the best views when going from Spokane to Seattle. I hope that’s true for buses too.

I stopped at the Satellite House for breakfast. Rather large pancakes. So I’m sitting at the train station waiting for a bus with a full belly (mine, not the bus).

The bus ride was, well let me just say I’m glad it’s over. The bus stopped at every little town, so it took a while and none of the stops had eating places. Fortunately I had brought some food. It didn’t matter which side of the bus I was on, there were nice views on both. The worst part was there was a homeless drug addict sitting in the seat in front of me. He tried to talk to me but I told him I was tired and going to sleep. So he spent most of the time talking non stop to the driver. The driver deserves sainthood. Well, it’s over. I’m in my hotel room ready for bed and I checked the remaining trip, no more bus rides.
